M-BAT project kicks off in Seville to advance recovery of critical battery raw materials

The M-BAT project officially launched with an in-person kick-off meeting hosted by IDENER at its Torre Sevilla facilities on 3 June 2026. M-BAT is a 42-month European research and innovation project funded by Horizon Europe, with IDENER serving as project coordinator.

The initiative will develop four innovative chemical processes to recover critical raw materials for the battery industry, targeting lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and graphite. The project will source materials from secondary mining, industrial residues, geothermal brines and end-of-life batteries, with the objective of reducing Europe’s dependency on critical raw materials.

Activities will focus on advancing technological readiness from laboratory to pre-industrial scales and validating the quality of recovered materials for battery-sector applications. Pilot plant demonstrations are planned across Spain, Poland and the United Kingdom, and environmental and social sustainability considerations will be integrated into process design.

IDENER and project partners will continue to define the technical roadmap, validation procedures and stakeholder engagement actions in the coming months. Further project updates and technical results will be published on IDENER.AI as they become available.
